How to Fix Common Video Call Audio and Connection Issues

Most video call problems fall into a small number of root causes. Work through these in order before assuming the software is broken.

Video call issues are frustrating partly because the symptoms look similar across very different causes — a frozen screen could mean a bandwidth problem, a CPU problem, or a server-side issue with the call provider. This guide walks through the actual causes in the order most likely to fix the problem fastest.

Step 1: Check if it's actually a bandwidth problem

Video freezing or pixelating, as opposed to full disconnects, is most often a bandwidth issue — either your own connection or the other participant's. Turning off your own camera temporarily (audio-only) is a fast way to test whether your upload bandwidth was the bottleneck, since video uses far more bandwidth than audio alone.

Step 2: Rule out other apps competing for bandwidth or CPU

Background cloud sync, large downloads, or other video-heavy apps running at the same time compete for the same bandwidth and can degrade call quality even on an otherwise adequate connection. Pausing large uploads/downloads during important calls is a simple, often-overlooked fix.

Step 3: Check audio input/output selection specifically

A surprising number of "no audio" complaints are simply the app using the wrong microphone or speaker device — especially after plugging in or removing headphones mid-session. Explicitly re-selecting the correct input and output device in the call software's settings fixes this more often than restarting the whole app.

Step 4: Restart the app before restarting the whole computer

Video call software maintains a persistent connection that can get into a bad state without the whole operating system being at fault. Fully quitting and reopening the app (not just closing the call window) resolves many connection issues that look like they need a full system restart.

  • Freezing/pixelating video, audio still fine: usually a bandwidth issue — try audio-only
  • No audio from a specific participant: check their input device selection first
  • Random disconnects for everyone: more likely a server-side issue with the call provider, not your setup
  • Fully quit and reopen the app before restarting your whole computer

When it's genuinely a provider outage

If the issue affects multiple participants across different networks and devices simultaneously, and persists after the steps above, check the call provider's public status page before troubleshooting further on your end — there's a reasonable chance it's a server-side outage, not a local configuration issue.
